Topic: Bitdefender Total Security makes Simply Fortran unusable

Hi,

I'm 100% sure this is not your software's or GNU Fortran's fault, but completely Bitdefender's.
But still I wanted to inform you about this.

I've downloaded the Simply Fortran evaluation version, as I am more and more interested in Fortran programming.

Unfortunately my security program Bitdefender Total Security makes it impossible to use the software.
Installing went fine and everything seems to work, until I run the program. Most of the time, just before or after running the program a dialog kicks in telling me malicious software has been removed from my PC. From that moment on, I can not compile or run the program ever again, unless I rename the project and reload it. But then it stars removing that new executable again.

It does not matter what kind of program, even empty ones.

I tried everything to notify Bitdefender that it should leave Simply Fortran and the Fortran project directory alone. I've entered the installation directory and the project directory as exclusives (so they should not be scanned). Even tried completely disabling the virus scanner. But no matter what I do the virus scanner always seems to run and still scan the program. I've configured BD to quarantine files, but even that it does not seem to do. The list with quarantined files is always empty...

I hate that products like Bitdefender completely take over control of my PC, but as I have a 2 year subscription, I am not willing yet to uninstall BD... although I will look for a better product after the subscription period is over.

I am truly interested in Simply Fortran, so I hope I can find a solution. It is exactly what I was looking for: a user friendly and effective IDE for GNU Fortran.

I do hope you manage to solve this problem with BitDefender, And I for one will be interested to hear whether BitDefender's quality of support has shown any improvement over my past experience of that software company.

BITDEFENDER TECH SUPPORT
A couple of years ago, I too was impressed by BitDefender - or at least impressed by independent evaluation reports of the product.  I purchased a 1-year licence.

Then, when I needed some tech support from BD (I forget what it was about but there was some problem or other I had encountered), I recall generally that, after entering a question or request on BD's own forum, I waited weeks and weeks for a response, putting in repeated requests, and received zero support, not a peep from BitDefender over a long period.

This was deeply disappointing.  I was generally pleased with the product but I found the tech support very poor.  When my subscription expired, and BD software auto-prompted me to buy another year, this time at a high price, I declined and went elsewhere.

SIMPLY FORTRAN TECH SUPPORT
Approximatrix usually responds to every posting or question on its forum within the first day.  Its not unusual to receive a reply within a couple of hours.  If (occasionally) the problem is troublesome and is caused by a bug in, or some lack of functionality of, Simply Fortran, Approximatrix gives it the highest priority.  We receive, typically, advice straight away on a workaround, then sometimes a patch to fix the problem whilst waiting for the next update, and nearly always a corrected version within a week or two.  If the problem is NOT caused by Simply Fortran, Approximatrix STILL searches for solutions and usually finds them - often after what must have been many hours of work to support users.   If the problem is that the user just isn't very experienced with Fortran, Approximatrix - and other users - pitch in willingly, and within hours, with help and guidance.

The comparison, for me, has been a contrast between the very poorest and by far the best tech support I have ever experienced.

Bitdefender, based on a few Internet searches, has a long history of issues with programs compiled with the GNU compilers.   You do have a few options for reporting the issue to Bitdefender. You might try posting in their "False Positive" forums as a starting point (there are plenty of complaints surrounding compiler output there).  You can also try submitting your executables that you compile to their False Positive reporting website at:

In order to keep your executable around you'll need to disable "Real-time protection" in Bitdefender.  More can be found in this thread:
